CHUNQ started in 2021 as an outlet for two percussionists (Danny Devillier and greg radcliff) to create original, percussion-heavy concert music. the challenge was to make as much sound as possible with only two people. as things evolved a third member (david crochet) was added to play bass guitar, guitar, and additional percussion. later still the addition of two more members (ashleigh d’uanoy and tim mcfatter) expanded the sound to include woodwinds. the repertoire runs the sonic spectrum from dreamlike and serene to head-scratchingly odd, using an array of standard percussion instruments like vibraphone, gongs, drums etc. to more unique sounds like the “torquenspeil” (a bell-like instrument made from wrenches), saw blades, slide whistles, as well as synth sounds, samples and loops.
